Stayin' Alive...Week 28
Feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin'. But then there are vertical gardens.
So this was the week:
Monday: Our 8-pound Chihuahua — henceforth, Isaac the superhero— woke us barking relentlessly in the middle of the night. Turns out he was drawing attention to a nasty electrical issue that could’ve been really, really bad. Like really bad. Superhero #2 (my knowledgable husband) was able to shut down the power and mitigate the problem temporarily. Whew.
Then: We endured several days of the atmospheric river, which was also pretty darn scary at times and life threatening to some. I felt rather uneasy last week that I made light of the epic storm by posting a scone recipe. But then a reader made the scones and sent me a photo! So I figure if I can inspire just one person to make a scone, I’ve added something valuable to this world. :)
Thursday: Found out something that’s been a major work source for a couple of years is downshifting considerably for 2024. Boo :(
Friday: Earthquake! With the epicenter about 7 miles from my house! I originally came from Iowa to L.A. to intern at Shape magazine when it was published in Woodland Hills. Kim (Hutton) Martin and I interned at the same time and we henceforth became lifelong friends. Kim moved to Colorado a long time ago and happened to be back in town this week visiting family — just in time for the quake. So here she is being interviewed by Channel 7 in the Vons parking lot right after the quake:
Kind of a shake up week, but on the positive side I had a fun Lunar New Year celebration at Woon Kitchen with some friends on Thursday night. Allishia proved her psychic abilities by predicting an earthquake and then, yep, it happened the next day. So there’s that.
I was also selected as one of only eight people for a 10-month novel revise workshop with Liz Harmer through Pioneer Valley Writers’ Workshop. So that’s kind of cool! And I received an invite from Sundress Academy of Arts to take part in a program in Tennessee next month. And there’s this…
Sneak Peak (as in vertical…read on)

Aren’t these vertical gardens impressive? They’re aeroponic towers that grow food supposedly using 90% less water and space than a traditional garden. I’m working on a story about some L.A. companies that have installed them on their rooftops and are even donating the produce to shelters. Individuals are also putting one or two of these aeroponic towers on their patios or balconies. I’m so intrigued.
Lastly, you probably want another pic of Isaac, but instead I’m leaving you with the immortal words of the Bee Gees..
whether you’re a brother or you’re a mother, you’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Feel the city breakin’ and everybody shakin’
I’m stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive…
Isaac! Superhero 😍
